Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, commonly known as MSMEs, play a crucial role in shaping India’s business environment. These enterprises include small manufacturers, service providers, traders, professionals, startups, and home-based businesses operating at different scales. MSME registration is a government-enabled system that provides formal identity to such businesses and connects them with policy support and development programs.
Earlier, MSMEs were registered under the Udyog Aadhaar system. To improve accuracy, transparency, and ease of compliance, the Government of India introduced Udyam Registration, which is now the official process for MSME recognition.
Why MSMEs Are Important for India’s Economy
MSMEs contribute significantly to employment generation and economic stability in India. They provide livelihood opportunities to millions of people, especially in areas where large industries have limited presence. By encouraging local production and services, MSMEs help strengthen domestic supply chains and promote balanced regional development.
